Rutgers Solar Car Team 2019-2020

Who are we?

The Rutgers Solar Car Team is an interdisciplinary university student-led organization, with a multitude of undergraduate students working alongside each other to accomplish our core mission; to design, manufacture and race a solar powered car and use it to inspire and educate the next generation of entrepreneurs and engineers. Sustainable transportation is one of the greatest challenges we face today, with an ever increasing population and dwindling natural resources to power traditional means of transportation. The technology we work on and advance is crucial in making our world greener and more efficient, and through annual competitions we push this technology to its limit over and over again, helping to shape the future right here from New Brunswick.

While some solar car teams at other institutions we compete against find themselves outsourcing work due to a lack of expertise in business, media, and communications, strategic partnerships with the Rutgers Business School and the Mason Gross School of the Arts have enabled us to complete all work in house with students at the helm of it all. The large diversity of students that Rutgers boasts is unique, and we are showing exactly why it is so valuable!

Our Racing Objectives:

Our objectives for the coming year fall into two categories; racing and educational outreach. Our racing goals are centered around the American Solar Challenge, a competition we will partake in this coming July, racing against other American and international universities from Missouri to Idaho. The race will test many aspects of our team; from the integrity of the vehicle to our operational and logistical readiness as we follow the route of the Historic Oregon Trail. While the journey in and of itself will be quite a feat, if we’re able to reach our funding objectives we will be able to mount a serious challenge to universities with more established solar car teams, such as the University of Michigan, MIT, and Georgia Tech. 

Public outreach:

Alongside developing and racing our solar car, we are also expanding upon our educational outreach programs with public school districts in New Jersey. As the State University of New Jersey, we have a mandate to the entire state, and a pillar of our team is giving back to the community that surrounds and supports us. This past spring, we were able to sign into action a groundbreaking agreement with the New Brunswick Public Schools, partnering up with the district to inspire their students to pursue higher education in the fields of STEM and Business Management. Throughout this year, we will continue to work with these students and host workshops ranging from resume building and business etiquette, to establishing the business value of a technical product and pitching a mock business plan. This gives students unrivaled professional experience, and ensures that they have what it takes to be successful in college and beyond!

Choose a giving level



This contribution level will help the team fulfill educational outreach programs centered at inspiring public school students throughout New Jersey to pursue higher education, emphasizing on Entrepreneurship, STEM, and the Arts.



This contribution level will support all of our logistical needs this summer as we compete in the American Solar Challenge, racing across the Mid-West with a large crew of students and support vehicles.



This contribution level will enable us to build telemetry systems of the highest quality, giving us precise live-readings of the car’s performance while on the road, maximizing our energy output factoring in weather and route information.



This contribution level will enable us to re-design our vehicle suspension and acquire specialized Michelin tires to minimize rolling resistance and increase our efficiency on the road.



This highest contribution level will allow our team to rebuild our canopy and numerous other parts of our aerodynamic shell with carbon fiber and fiberglass composite materials, making this one of the lightest and fastest vehicles around!
