Stop Student Hunger in Newark

This Month, Join in and Stop Student Hunger

Thank you for your interest in supporting the Rutgers food pantries. While #GivingTuesday is over, you can support students year round at our website: support.rutgers.edu . Thank you for your helping to fill a plate and feed a mind.

Nearly half of all college student students worry about how they will afford their next meal. Food insecurity, or unreliable access to nutritious meals, is a growing problem on college campuses, especially as students and their families recover from the effects of the pandemic. At Rutgers University–Newark, students can turn to the PantryRUN for support. This month, we’re turning to you.

You can help put a dent in student hunger by joining in this month. Support Rutgers–Newark in a friendly faceoff with Rutgers–Camden in the Raptors vs. Raiders Food Drive Challenge. Your support of the PantryRUN, whether through food item donations (see below for details) or a monetary gift from November 16 to November 30, will help Rutgers–Newark take home the win!

And don’t forget to show your support for the PantryRUN by making a gift on the final day of the competition, Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving on November 30!

Giving Tuesday - A Global Movement

Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of radical generosity. Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Since then, it has grown into a year-round global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.

At Rutgers–Newark, you can fill a plate and feed a mind for Giving Tuesday in support of the PantryRUN!

Student Hunger in the US

Studies indicate that students across a broad spectrum of higher education institutions worry about finding their next meal, and the pandemic has only worsened the problem of food insecurity. Essex County, the home to many of our students, has the highest food insecurity rate in New Jersey. Nationwide, there has been a rapid growth in food insecurity as a result of COVID-19. Many Rutgers University–Newark students are in high-risk groups for food insecurity, including first-generation students, students of color, and working students.

The resulting hunger can threaten their ability to succeed. Throughout the month, your support can make a difference in the lives of students facing food insecurity at Rutgers–Newark. Your gifts will support the PantryRUN, the on-campus food pantry, which provides access to groceries and toiletries for students in need of a helping hand.

About the PantryRUN & Raptors vs. Raiders Food Drive Challenge

The PantryRUN is an on-campus food pantry available to students at Rutgers–Newark who are struggling with food insecurity. At PantryRUN, students can pick up weekly groceries and toiletries, including fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy, lean protein, and more. Located in the Paul Robeson Campus Center, the pantry is stocked with in-kind donations from alumni, student groups, and others.

This month, the alumni engagement offices at Rutgers University–Camden and Rutgers University–Newark invite you to participate in a friendly competition to see which location can garner the most support! Take part in the Raptors vs. Raiders Food Drive Challenge from November 16–30 and join in on the final day for Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving.

Food and cash donations make it possible for PantryRUN to help students in need. Here’s how you can help Rutgers–Newark win the Raptors vs. Raiders Food Drive Challenge:
