Giving Tuesday - A Global Movement

Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of radical generosity. Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Since then, it has grown into a year-round global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.

At Rutgers University, you can fill a plate and feed a mind for Giving Tuesday in support of our on-campus student food pantries.

Student Hunger in the US

Nearly half of college students worry about how they will afford their next meal. Studies indicate that students across a broad spectrum of higher education institutions worry about finding their next meal, and the pandemic has only worsened the problem of food insecurity. Food insecurity is defined as a lack of consistent access to enough food for every person in a household to live a healthy life. To combat it, food pantries across Rutgers provide students with thousands of meals each semester.

About the Rutgers University Student Food Pantry

At the Rutgers Student Food Pantry, your Giving Tuesday donations will be put to work immediately. The Rutgers Student Food Pantry was established in the fall of 2016 and receives more than 4,000 student visits per year. Over the last year, the pantry distributed more than 70,000 pounds of food. Your gift today will provide students with peace of mind as they go on to tackle their college degrees and discover careers of meaning and consequence.

The pantry keeps shelves stocked with groceries, both non-perishable items and fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as toiletries, and personal care items. Your support will ensure that the shelves are full for students in need of a helping hand. Just $40 covers one weekly trip to the Rutgers Student Food Pantry. In addition, when necessary, students are connected with additional support services around campus.
