Description

Carlos de Miranda Pato, a distinguished scientist and engineer and  beloved, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away on January 19, 2023. He was 94 years old.  

Carlos was born in Anadia, Portugal, and earned degrees in Agronomy and Enology from the University of Lisbon in 1950. In 1955 he married Odette (Neves) Pato, his caring wife of 68 years. In 1956, Carlos began his tenure as the Director of the Enology Department of the Economic Ministry, stationed in the Douro wine making region of Portugal, with visiting academic appointments at University of California in Davis. 

In 1963, Carlos immigrated along with his wife and two sons to New York City. He took a position as Research and Development Director at Monarch Wines of Brooklyn, New York, where he oversaw the production and development of a number of NY wines and champagnes. The couple added a daughter to their growing family in 1969 and lived in Staten Island for 22 years. In 1985, The family relocated to Fredonia, New York where Carlos served as Vice-President of Research and Development for Cliffstar Corporation until he retired in 2000.

Carlos spent the last 20 years enjoying his time near family in Manlius, New York, until a move last year to Harbor Chase of Princeton Memory Care, near his eldest son in New Jersey. He was deeply loved by his wife, children, grandchildren, son-in-law and daughters-in-law, nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Mario and Elvira, two beloved brothers Mario and Octavio and his cherished sister, Maria Ernestina. He is survived by his devoted widow, Odette Pato; his sons, Carlos N. Pato and Joseph Pato and his daughter, Ana Morley; his children’s spouses, Michele Pato, Jeri Zeder and Christopher Morley; his grandchildren: Michael Pato, Eric Pato, Isaac Pato Dylan Pato, Jillian Morley and Diana Morley; and his two great grandchildren, Elliot & Adrian Kornmeier-Pato.

At the end of 2021, the family established the Odette and Carlos Pato Fund at Rutgers to support Psychiatric Research.  In lieu of flowers or other offers in his memory, please make a contribution to the Odette and Carlos Pato Fund.
